Kenotaphion
Quite an interesting concept album. Mr. Semper acquired the annual Amistice Day recordings made by the BBC during the period of 1929 thruough 2000, and compiled them onto a two-disc set. The liner notes explain this so much better than I do, but Armistice Day is honored in England every November, and is observed as two minutes of silence followed by a gun salute. So, yes... this is a series of annual recordings of two silent minutes in London. What do you hear? First, Big Ben. Then, then birds. Rain softly striking pavement. Or maybe a distant murmur of traffic. Sometimes muffled audio disturbances, from those urban residents who were somehow unable to remain in silent reverence. But mostly... crackles, tape hiss, or microphone hiss, as the time period allows. In whole, a lovely ephemeral archive, and hopefully one still available to the public.
